The Crisis in North Carolina

The challenges contributing to the animal welfare crisis in North Carolina include the following:

  1. Overwhelmed shelters, often resulting in intake closure, euthanasia, disease outbreaks resulting in euthanasia of adoptable animals, and limited staffing and volunteer support
  2. Lack of affordable veterinary care, deterring pet owners from seeking care and leading to surrender or neglect. The shortage of veterinarians results in increased wait times and limited access to spay/ neuter services which contributes to overpopulation
  3. Insufficient pet-friendly housing, leading to surrender or eviction
  4. Economic uncertainty, job loss, food insecurity, and homelessness often result in surrender or neglect
  5. Increased need for education and awareness about the importance of spaying, neutering, and fostering and where to find low-cost veterinary options, pet food support, and transportation assistance
  6. Limited foster and rescue capacity due to overcapacity, volunteer shortages, fundraising challenges, and compassion fatigue

The Community’s Role in Animal Welfare

Animal welfare is not just the responsibility of shelters and rescues—it’s a shared responsibility. Here’s how we can all contribute:

  1. Adopt, don’t shop from breeders or pet stores. There are many full breed cats and dogs that end up in shelters
  2. Foster animals. Even if you can only foster once or for a couple of weeks, that could mean the difference between life and death for an animal. It is so rewarding and impactful
  3. Spay and neuter pets to help efforts to reduce overpopulation, suffering, and unnecessary euthanisia
  4. Volunteer with a rescue or shelter. There are many needs, including walking dogs and socializing kittens, transporting animals, participating in events, and more
  5. Recognize abuse and neglect and contact animal control
  6. Support local rescues and shelters by donating money, services, supplies and sponsoring or attending programs/ events
  7. Advocate for policy change related to animal welfare, expanding access to veterinary services, and more inclusive pet policies in communities/ housing
